TE KAOKAOROA HE PAKANGA MO MANA MOTUHAKE 1864 - Battle to Repel Tairawhiti Invaders

Author(s): Hamuera W Mitchell

Māori Military History

From a Ngati Whakaue perspective of the battles fought in April 1864 to repluse a Tairawhiti army from crossing Te Arawa lands were under the mantle of tribal mana.

The allegation that Te Arawa was in a coalition with British Military forces is refuted. Also the assertation by alien tribes or tauiwi that Te Arawa were 'kupapa' is rejected.

Both the Te Arawa and British took advantage of each other to further their own military goals: Te Arawa to repel an invading army; the British to defend its southern flank at maketu as it prepared to face the Tauranga iwi at Gate Pa.
