Local Description

"This novel opens with an apparently idyllic scene -  an American Korean teenager and her lover enjoying the sunset on a quiet South Korean beach. The peace is suddenly disrupted when out of nowhere, a submarine emerges from the depths and as they turn to run, soldiers appear behind them in the trees.

Cut to 12 years later, and Jenna is still mourning the mysterious disappearance and supposed drowning of her identical twin Soo-Min. Jenna, very intelligent, is picked up by the CIA who train her and want her to work for them in uncovering the motives behind missile launches from North Korea. Jenna is about to discover a horrendous amount more than she anticipated, as well as the truth about what really happened to her sister. The book weaves between various characters including a disillusioned North Korean official and a feisty older peasant woman who discovers a forbidden national aid balloon, which sets her on a new path.
The writing is both eloquent and compelling, and the story is very disturbing in parts. What is most disturbing is the fact that at the end, the author lists which parts of the novel are actually happening in North Korea today, and most of them are. This book is so full of heart and depth, and is much more than just a thriller. I can not recommend highly enough. Reviewed by Jemma"
