Ideally we downsize and leave the modern world behind. The weather cooperates. We throw veranda doors open to catch the breeze and spend all day in our togs. Long afternoons are full of simple pleasures and mouth-watering smells, the family killing time with board games and well-thumbed paperbacks. We listen to old records while the day's kai moana gets a smokey tang on the barbeque, Mum serving up dad's catch on kiwiana crockery collected over the generations. In this great country of ours, as then became now, vintage cool was always about the chilling. Many details are from Tanya Wolfkamp’s own mid-century cottage, coloured every summer with arrangements of freshly picked dahlias in Crown Lynn vases.
