ook one of Miriam Macgregor's 'Petticoat Pioneer" series of three volumes It deals with early women pioneers in alphabetical order, beginning with the Mother Mary Joseph Aubert, a French nun who came to NZ in 1860 and devoted her life to the care and education of the Maori people, the aged and other welfare work. She died in 1926. The biographies, which total 54, conclude with Alice Sweetman Wilson, who died of injuries after being attacked by Hauhau in Hawkes Bay in 1868. Her husband and two young children also died in the attack and one son, eight years old Jimmie, was the only survivor.The area covered by the biogs is mainly that of the central East Coast of the North Island and includes Maori women and early settler womenfolk.
