The directors felt that preparing material for a retrospective monograph might not only be a tangible way to celebrate the achievements of ASC, but that the process might in itself be a mechanism of discovery. They soon discovered that this kind of critical reflection is extremely tough. As they began to look back on what the practice had achieved over those fifty years, they saw that while they could easily identify many examples of individually good work, it was far more challenging to uncover the thematic evolution of ideas and influences that had shaped and formed this work over the decades."
